ImageA martial arts club wants to revamp a boarded-up community centre and open a new venue for its members.

Norwich Premier Judo club was recently rejected in its application for government funding to revamp Heathgate Community Centre.

The club submitted a joint grant application with the city council for a £250,000 community assets award to bring the empty building back into use for the community.

Nigel Thompson, the senior club coach, told the Norwich Evening News that council officials were stalling on the move.

"I had a meeting with the council, and the way it was left was that they want to let us have the building, but not straightaway because of red tape.

"We missed out on the funding and we know that there's other funding we can apply for but we're not prepared to do that until the council gives us the building."

The community centre has been shut and boarded up since 1998 and plans to reopen it in 2005 were scrapped as the council had a two million pound hole in its capital budget.

Norwich Premier Judo club is currently residing in the Sportspark development in the city, which is home to three martial arts clubs.

The complex recently announced that construction has started on a new £3.8 million extension which is due for completion in February 2009.
