ImageA North London martial arts expert was named fighter of the year at the Seni 2008 Gracie Invitational competition.

Daniel Strauss, from Mill Hill Jiujitsu Club won a gold in the adult division of the blue belt featherweight category and also silver in the team event, reports the Edgware and Mill Hill Times.

The 17-year-old was picked from more than 800 fighters to be presented with the fighter of the year award, receiving it from world champion Jeff Monson and black belt Braulio Estima.

He was chosen as the winner of the award after his outstanding performances over the last 12 months, including winning the gold medal at the World NoGi Jiujitsu Championships in Los Angeles.

The Gracie Invitational competition is the biggest of its kind in the UK and is held at the Seni martial arts exhibition which attracts over 25,000 people over two days.

Jiu Jitsu focuses on grappling and ground fighting, with the goal of gaining a dominant position over the opposition.
