A young tae kwon do expert has received his black belt in the martial art.
Thomas Spooner is a student at the Kidderminster Tae Kwon Do Club and had to impress a panel of seventh dan black belts to pass his grading, reports the Kidderminster Shuffle. He is trained by Vince Farquharson, who is a fifth dan black belt and has been an instructor for 15 years.
Katie Billingham, assistant instructor at the club, told the newspaper that Tom was one of the best students at the club, works hard at his training and helps others, making him a good example to the rest of the members.
"He received our student of the year award last year because of his outstanding attitude and hard work, which has now been rewarded even more in achieving his black belt," she added.
The senior section of tae kwon do is made up of nine different ranks of black belts, each one being referred to as dan.
Students must demonstrate their proficiency to a panel of judges to complete promotion tests.
