A school has received funding to provide youngsters with opportunity to do martial arts workouts before school.
Brackenhill Primary School in Bradford has received £5,000 to give youngsters early morning physical exercise, reports the Bradford Telegraph and Argus.
It is claimed that 25 per cent of boys and 33 per cent of girls between the ages of two and 19 are overweight and the school obtained the Awards for All grant to continue its work with Bradford-based Junior Jam.
The GymJam project aims to improve youngsters' health in the area and offers a 45-minute workout with non-contact martial arts, street dance, break dance and capoeira. The funding will allow the sessions to continue for a full year.
Peter Judson, learning mentor at Brackenhill School, told the newspaper that the project was proving a success after only a few days.
"It prepares them for the day ahead. It is a brilliant start to the morning," he said.
According to figures from the BBC over one million people under the age of 16 are now classed as obese and this number has doubled in the last ten years.
