ImageA new martial arts club has been opened specifically targeting the over 50s.

Mohan Jujitsu, which is based in the Wear Valley, has launched the club at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, reports the Newton News.

The emphasis of the classes is on protecting yourself and families. Senior coach Graham Tomaszko, a fourth dan in Jujitsu, has personally designed the techniques that will be taught at the classes.

He told the publication that the classes were aimed at the age group because "it is often this age and above, including senior citizens, that feel the most vulnerable in today's society and often feel let down by the public bodies that should be there to protect them".

Mr Tomaszko added that there were no levels of physical fitness required to participate in the classes and it is suitable for any age.

Jujitsu consists of a combination of grappling and striking techniques. Techniques have been developed around the principal aim of using an attacker's energy against him.
