ImageA world champion kickboxer is desperately trying to raise the funds to defend her title in America.

Charlene Murray won a gold medal in 2007 as part of the Northern Ireland squad which clinched the world team title, reports the Derry Journal.

The 25-year-old was recently crowned the senior female of the year by Limavady Sports Council and needs to raise at least £1,200 to pay for flights and accommodation to attend the 2008 World Kickboxing and Karate Association World Championships, which will be held at Disneyland, Florida.

Ms Murray said that she would be "gutted" to not compete.

"I have my name out there and I want to win the team event again and the individual event and bring them back to Limavady," she added.

The supermarket worker has eight weeks left to raise the money without which she will have to announce her withdrawal from the competition.

Recently, the Belfast News Letter reported a second trip to Northern Ireland by kickboxing legend Ernest Hoost. The Dutch competitor, nicknamed Mr Legend, coached classes at the ProKick club in the city.
