ImageTwo martial arts enthusiasts from Teesside have won medals in the English National Karate Championships.

Vinny Dawson and Harvey Spaxman are members of the Teesside Academy of Shukokai Karate, which is one of 12 clubs which form the Taisho-do Karate Association.

Vinny won silver in the ten to eleven-year-old over 40 kg category and Harvey got a bronze medal in the nine-year-old over 35 kg division, reports the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette.

It was the first time that the association had won medals in the national championships.

Mark Raistrick, fourth dan head coach for the Taisho-do association, spoke of his pride at the student's performances against the top karate athletes in England, with many of them already selected in the national karate squad.

"In my years competing at this event my own association had never had success, so it was very satisfying to get two medals at the first attempt," he said.

Taisho-do means "way of the leaders" and teaches effective, practical self-defence techniques and is rooted in karate and other martial arts.
