ImageChildren in Burnley are being offered martial arts classes to combat anti-social behaviour and crime.

A new initiative run by the police can offer up to 20 youngsters from the areas of Bradley, Barrowford, Clover Hill and Walverden, a choice of classes in martial arts, circuit training or dance.

The Burnley Citizen reports that classes aim to not only take children off the street to prevent them committing crimes, but also ensures they do not become victims of crime by hanging round on the streets on a night.

PC Anna Kitson, who covers the Bradley ward, told the newspaper that the classes are subsidised and cost £1, so that the kids know they have to "give something to get it back".

"Not only is it a diversionary activity which keeps people away from offending behaviour, but also encourages team building and interaction skills," said PC Kitson.

The classes are funded by Rank, a charitable trust which aims to develop and engage with children in ways to hep their all-round development.
