ImageFour martial arts instructors from Whitby have successfully passed official coaching qualifications.

The four have been awarded their coaching qualification level one City and Guilds award by Classic Coaching in Kent, reports the Whitby Gazette.

All of the instructors are members of the town's Shotokan Karate Club: sensei Mike Howard, third dan sensei Jim White, second dan sensei Chris Watmouth and second dan sensei Sam Pybus.

The course which the four passed included skills such as lesson planning, coaching adults and children, health and safety and child protection.

Mr White told the newspaper that the need for people to understand self defence was more obvious today than ever.

He said: "A solid knowledge of karate will allow you to defend yourself and others."

"Many people especially children study karate in order to build up their self-esteem and self-confidence," added Mr White.

Classic Coaching provides support and access to appropriate qualifications for people within martial arts and its director, Martin Gatter, works as an external verifier for the City and Guilds board.
