ImageA Jujitsu fighter is funding her participation in the Mundai World Championship herself.

Lisa Newton, from Hartlepool, is paying more than £1,000 to compete in the tournament which takes place in Long Beach, California, reports the Hartlepool Mail.

She is competing in two categories at the championships in June and is also aiming to qualify for the European Championships which takes place in Finland.

Ms Newton started martial arts training in 2002 and regularly competes in tournaments around the world. Her regular training location is at the Gracie Barra gym in Newcastle.

"I really want to do well in my category and I'm confident of winning gold," she told the newspaper.

"The trip to America has cost me over £1,000 but it will all be worth it if I achieve my dream of becoming a full time fighter."

In other recent news, a Jujitsu club has launched a new range of classes aimed specifically at people over the age of 50.

The Newton News reports that Mohan Jujitsu will run classes at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre and assures people that no level of physical fitness is required to participate.
