ImageA ten-year-old schoolboy from Sussex has earned his black belt in karate.

Mathew Knight from Uckfield has trained in the martial art since the age of four-and-a-half and is a member of Harlands with Kicks of Ridgewood School along with his younger sister Charlotte.

Sussex Express reports that Mathew is now one of the youngest people in the country to be awarded black belt status and now aims for first, second and third stage dan qualifications.

Robin Knight, Mathew's grandfather, told the newspaper the whole family were "really proud" of his achievements.

"He's quite an all-round sportsman and plays football for East Hoathly."

Mathew's achievement follow the success of eight-year-old Ryan Dixon who was recently awarded his black belt in ju-jitsu.

The Northumberland Gazette reported that Ryan was tested by coaches from the World Ju-Jitsu Federation during his grading.
