The National Association of Karate and Martial Arts Schools (NAKMAS) has received recognition for its active pursuit of diversity at its centres. It was awarded the foundation level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport because it has shown a great willingness to encourage individuals from all backgrounds to take up and enjoy the sport. Joe Ellis, chairman of the association, said: "Our determination to widen accessibility to the martial arts will bring the benefits and enjoyment of the sport to more people than ever before." The award itself was set up by Lord Carter at the Equality in Sport conference in 2004 and aims to increase the number of under-represented minorities in UK sport. NAKMAS is a non-funded national governing body for martial arts practitioners in the UK and has its head offices in Kent. It is currently the only multi-styled national governing body for martial arts which has received this accolade.
