A north-east martial arts centre is offering free self defence classes to help protect people against the recent nationwide spate of knife attacks.
Solo Martial Arts in Gosforth offers training in a variety of methods including kung fu, karate, kickboxing and aikido.
Diane Hunter, black belt and owner of the school, told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle that anyone from three-year olds to housewives are welcome to attend the self defence classes.
"It's not just about safety, it's about confidence and self-discipline," she explained.
"If you know you can handle yourself then you can hold your head high when you step out of the door."
Ms Hunter concluded that violence should always be the "the last option" but having the knowledge of how to defend yourself helps you to be ready.
Eight-year-old Alice Johnson from Devon recently won the Young People's Achievement Award in the Staying Safe category for her dedication to learning self defence skills, Devon 24 reported.
