ImageA martial arts class which works to keep children off the streets has been awarded funding.

The group from the Buffalo Community Centre in Blyth has received £500 from Rio Tinto Alcan's Community Foundation fund, the News Post Leader reports.

Devised to provide youngsters with a healthy and safe meeting place for after school, the martial arts class was formed after speaking to the local children about what they wanted from the centre.

They are trained by instructor Jason Anderson in both judo and self defence.

John McCabe, a spokesman for Rio Tinto Alcan, told the newspaper that they are "keen to support exercise-based classes".

"We are delighted to be able to help the youngsters of Blyth learn new skills and take part in community-based activities," he added.

It was recently revealed that a self defence class at All Souls Clubhouse in Camden is teaching local children special tactics to avoid being stabbed following a spate of high profile incidents across London, the BBC reported.
