A regional judo competition has resulted in the local martial arts club seeing a growth in memberships.
The first ever schools judo competition in Rutland, which was the culmination of a six month training partnership between the town's schools and Vale Judo Club in Oakham, was won by Cottesmore Primary School.
According to the Rutland Times, 370 youngsters from 14 schools got involved in the scheme and qualified national referees from the British Judo Organisation co-ordinated the event.
Mike Newton, senior coach at the Vale club told the newspaper that it plans to "extend the number of children taking part next year".
"This club-school link has encouraged around 60 children to join our club, as well as some of their brothers, sisters and parents. We now have the largest membership base of any judo club in the East Midlands," he explained.
The Tang So Do Martial Arts Centre in Oldham has been attempting to boost its membership by offering family-orientated classes in kung fu and self defence, the Oldham Advertiser reported.
