ImageAn eight-year-old from Wishaw was victorious at the Scottish Tae Kwon Do Championships.

Lee Houston, who trains at the Wishaw YMCA Tae Kwon Do Club, won a gold medal in the under 135cm height category.

The Wishaw Press reports that he defeated three opponents to appear in the tournament final, which he eventually won after two sudden-death play-offs.

Lee, who won a bronze in the competition 12 months ago, is also one step away from being black belt status.

His mother, Nicola Houston, told the newspaper that Lee is "totally dedicated" and was very proud of his achievement.

"The competition was stiff this year but thanks to the great coaching which he's been getting from the team at Wishaw YMCA Lee had enough to win through," she added.

Lee's triumph follows the news that nine-year-old Kashif Tahir, who trains at the Tarbiyah Karate Academy in Dewsbury, won the British National Amateur Martial Arts Association Championships, according to the Dewsbury Reporter.
