ImageThe martial art of krav maga can be used in self defence and to help improve fitness, according to two Colchester instructors.

It was originally taught to the Israeli army and police force, according to the Gazette, but can be learnt by anyone.

Gavin Cawley, a level four instructor of the martial art, told the newspaper that krav maga uses movements that are easy to learn and which the body would do automatically.

"Anyone can learn it and it will help to improve your fitness," he said.

"It is very effective as self defence," Sean Doyland of SD Martial Arts added.

"It looks really complicated but it's actually very simple."

Reporter Lynne Milford commented that after 20 minutes of learning krav maga, she could easily see how knowing the moves would make people feel more confident.

According to Krav Maga Worldwide, the martial art was founded by Imi Lichtenfeld, the son of a police officer and self defence instructor.
