The prime minister has called for more young people to take up sports which "instil discipline".
Gordon Brown cited martial arts and boxing, together with canoeing, cycling and diving, as sports that he hoped to see increasing numbers of people participating in as part of the run-up to London's 2012 Olympics.
He made the comments while unveiling his plans for a return to "competitive sport in schools".
The PM said that the recent "medals for all" culture had meant that young athletes in the UK had "suffered" under the no winners and losers notion.
"It was wrong. It didn't work. In sport you get better by challenging yourself against others and contrasting your performance. Competitive spirit is essential for sport," he added.
Two fighters from the Northern Tang Soo Do Karate Club in Redcar recently won gold at the World Championships in Florida, the Evening Gazette reported.
