ImageThe mayor of London has vowed to help expand the network of martial arts clubs across the capital.

Boris Johnson has spoken to the Evening Standard about his pledge to invest millions of pounds into coaching young people in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics.

He said that he was "totally dedicated" to helping future British sporting success and will work with councils.

A range of funding is set to be established to expand martial arts in community centres, together with helping to resurface tennis courts and help transport children to local swimming facilities.

"I hope a new generation of London children will be enthused, inspired and get involved in sport in a way that they're not now," said Mr Johnson.

The prime minister Gordon Brown recently said that he hopes to see more people participating in martial arts and boxing ahead of the run-up to the 2012 Games with the return of "competitive sport in schools".
