Downey Jnr: 'martial arts helped deal with addictions' PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 September 2008
ImageA Hollywood actor has revealed that martial arts has helped him to deal with his drink and drug addictions.

Robert Downey Jnr, set to be seen in the forthcoming film Tropic Thunder, told The People that he turned to kung fu to help him combat his demons and "wipe the slate clean".

He told the newspaper that by dedicating time to learning and practising kung fu it was a way to help him with the addiction that he describes as "massively humiliating".

Speaking about possibly using his new skills in a future film role, he added: "Would I love to do a great movie in which there are martial arts and work in China? Of course.

"But there is something to be said for keeping off the screen what is a personal and spiritual endeavour for yourself."

Variety magazine recently claimed that Hollywood was increasingly looking at British actors to portray "tough guys" on screen, citing Batman star Christian Bale who exhibited a range of martial arts skills in recent film the Dark Knight.
