ImageA student from the north-east of England is celebrating after winning two medals at the Tang Soo Do Associations World Championship.

Tom Beedle, from Redcar, is a student at the University of Teesside and trains at the Northern Tang Soo Do martial arts club in his home town.

According to the Northern Echo, Mr Beedle won a gold and bronze medal at the tournament in Florida, six years after originally taking up the sport.

The martial arts enthusiast receives funding from the university's elite academic bursary scheme, which aims to help talented athletes reach the pinnacle of their sport.

Mr Beedle told the newspaper that the scheme offers a range of benefits to his training.

"We get advice about training and take part in gym sessions at the university with other students on the scheme," he added.

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, recently told the Evening Standard that he planned to invest in expanding the network of martial arts clubs across the capital.
