The judo champion from the UK School Games has admitted he faces an "uphill task" to fulfil his dream of competing at the 2012 London Olympics.
Kane Charig, who trains at Bath University and won gold in the under 60kg category at the games, told the Swindon Advertiser that the 2016 Games could be a more "realistic option".
He added that he will continue to build up for London 2012 as it is a dream he is "really aiming for".
"I'm planning for the Olympics but well see yet there are a lot of competitions to come before I start worrying about that," said Mr Charig.
"I just want to kick on from this now and see where it takes me. It's a fantastic starting point but Ive got more work to do now."
Gordon Brown recently announced that he hopes to see an increase in the number of people competing in martial arts as part of the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.
The prime minister called for more people taking up sports which "instil discipline".
