ImageA female fighter has won a silver medal at the world championships despite competing with a cracked rib.

Gerri Laird from Uttoxeter finished second at the Kickboxing World Championship in the Czech Republic.

She told the Uttoxeter Advertiser that the pain resulting from her injury was blocked out by the adrenaline, despite taking "quite a few hits" on the affected rib.

Ms Laird took up the marital art in order to get fit and improve her lifestyle and spoke of her shock at now being ranked the second best female fighter in the world.

"I've only been fighting for two-and-a-half years and believed I could get a medal," she added.

"I just wanted to do my coaches proud for their hard work, dedication and guidance in the run-up to the tournament."

Alex Henderson, 18 from Corby, recently won gold in the North American Sport Karate championships in Florida, the Evening Telegraph reported.
