ImageA martial arts expert from the north-west of England is celebrating after winning world championship gold.

Peter Mercer from Birkenhead has won the heavyweight category in FX3 kickboxing during a competition in Reading.

The Wirral Globe reports that Mr Mercer, who fights under the name Kurgan, remains unbeaten in his fighting career.

He trains as a member of the Birkenhead-based Fitness 2000 gym and took up the martial art after training in boxing with the Huntingdon Police Boxing Club.

Mr Mercer has since trained alongside some of England's top kickboxing competitors and is next scheduled to defend his title in November.

Andy Bourgaize from Guernsey was recently the first person from the island to be awarded a black belt in the martial art of kenpo karate.

The Guernsey Press reported that he had trained in the martial art for over a decade.
