A former leader of the Conservative party has urged youngsters to take up self defence.
William Hague told The Sun than children should take up the martial art to build up their "general fitness".
Mr Hague, himself a blue belt in judo, said that children should follow his example and learn self defence due to the growing number of violent attacks occurring across the UK.
He added: "Judo is not meant to be something to use in the streets - we need a safe society in order to do that."
Talking about the issue of knife crime, Mr Hague said the current government was "too weak" and his own party would have a "tougher approach" if elected.
Reuters recently reported rumours that Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin was set to teach martial arts skills to French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
Mr Putin told French newspaper Le Figar: "He (Sarkozy) is interested in martial arts and we have decided to do some training together."
