A martial arts class in the south-west of England has been training a growing band of elderly competitors.
The Aiko Jo club in Bideford features a number of people in their 60s, one in his 70s and another over the age of 80.
According to the North Devon Gazette, the group trains in Aikido and short staff fighting under the guidance of veteran instructor Richard Small.
The martial art promotes balance, co-ordination, timing and power.
Mr Small, a 3rd dan, told the newspaper it was perfect for the class because they are "too told to go rolling around on the ground".
"The beauty is that you can do it anywhere," he added.
"You can buy a stick - a broom handle will do. You can do it on the beach, or pick up a stick in woodland."
In other news, the Southend Echo reports that professional boxer James Chisholm is setting up a new martial arts, boxing and fitness centre in the town.
