A Scottish martial arts club is attempting to raise funds to take some of its most promising young students to a major international competition.
Ashgill-based Elite Freestyle Kickboxing and Karate International won medals at the World Karate Association (WKA) Scottish Championships recently, securing 11 places at the WKA World Championships in Spain at the end of the year, the Hamilton Advertiser states.
The club is planning various fundraising events to support the cost of travel and accommodation, including a casino night and a ladies' spiritualist event.
Hayden McFadden, father of two gifted fighters, told the publication: "These days, when we hear so many negative stories about our young people, it is quite remarkable that small villages like Ashgill and Kirkmuirhill should have so many talented athletes."
Mr McFadden added that by October the villages may be home to a new world champion.
In related news, a Norfolk judo club hosted a beginners' tournament for students aged between five and 12, according to the Diss Express.
For many of the young fighters at Kumo Judo Club it was the first taste of competitive judo which will help them learn self defence, as well as life skills such as respect and integrity.
