ImagePolice in London are running a judo course for individuals who have been bullied or mugged.

According to the Hackney Gazette, the ten-week course at Lower Clapton's Kings Hall leisure centre in East London is geared towards boosting youngsters' confidence, discipline and self defence skills.

Police sergeant and judo black belt Andy Newman has organised the class in conjunction with the British Judo Association and the NHS.

"Being a victim of crime can affect a person's quality of life. This course is helping them grow in self-confidence so they don't emit signals of fear in the street and become repeat victims of crime," Sgt Newman told the newspaper.

Some 20 people have already signed up to the weekly sessions, which the policeman hopes to extend to other areas of London in the near future.

Meanwhile, professional golfer Shingo Katayama recently revealed that he has taken up martial arts in an attempt to improve his swing.

Commenting at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, the Japanese sportsman revealed that he is developing his style by studying the ancient art of aikido.ADNFCR-1215-ID-19178587-ADNFCR
